About SwipeScan
SwipeScan is a small product with one job: get an exact number off a screen, a label or a photo, without retyping it. It has two parts — the free tools on this site, and the SwipeScan — Number Scanner app for iPhone and Android.
Who makes it
SwipeScan is made by Ilya Makarov, founder of 1Clue. 1Clue is a small independent studio that builds focused mobile apps; SwipeScan is one of them. You can find more about Ilya at imakarov.us.
The guides on this site are published by Ilya. When a guide turns out to be wrong or out of date, it is corrected and its “Updated” date changes.
How the browser tools work
- Recognition runs in your browser tab. The tools use Tesseract.js, an open-source OCR engine, loaded from a public CDN. Your image is processed on your device and is not uploaded to us.
- Check digits are recomputed, not guessed. IMEI uses the Luhn algorithm, VIN uses the mod-11 check digit, IBAN uses mod-97. A green badge means the value is internally consistent; red means a character was almost certainly misread.
- The tools are free and need no account. The app is free to install; its Number Mode and scan history are paid features.
How the app works
The app recognises text on the device with Google ML Kit. You swipe over the line you need, and only that stroke is read; the result goes straight to the clipboard.
